This large Brazilian banknote represents the 1st denomination of the 2nd Cruzeiro Overprint (Series 1986). This series was introduced as a stop-gap measure, before the introduction of the Cruzado. As the 2nd Cruzeiro underwent rampant inflation. Requiring Brazil's currency to be reevaluated, similar to the previous Cruzeiro Novo (later renamed 2nd Cruzeiro).
The first Cruzado notes were simply 2nd Cruzeiro, with an overprint stamp. Such as this particular denomination, which is based on the 10 000 Cruzeiro (1984-86). The stamp reevaluated the note by a factor of 1,000 to 1.
Observe
The observe features a portrait of abolitionist Ruy Barbosa de Oliveira (1849-1923). Who was skilled diplomat, writer, jurist, and politician. Barbosa represented Brazil during the Second Hague Conference. To the right of the portrait, is lamp lit desk with a folder. The folder's French language title reads, "Second Conference Peace, The Hague 1907".
The note's header is off-set to the upper-left. It reads, the (trans.) "Central Bank of Brazil". Notably a faint security thread aligns with the letter "D" (DO). Below the header is one of the note's dual-serial numbers (A 4275019552 A). The second number can be seen at the lower-right.
At the lower-left is a large number "10 000". Its (trans.) "Ten Thousand Cruzado" text value is listed on a decorative backing. A second number "10 000" can be seen at the upper-right. Below is a pair of signatures, representing the Minister of Finance (top) and Central Bank President (bottom).
Beneath the signatures is are "doorway" registration elements. Backlighting the note with bright light, will complete the light puzzle effect. Doing so will also expose a mirrored "Rui Barbosa" watermark. To the right of the watermark is a decorative border of "file tabs".
The center stamp converts the note to 10 Cruzados.
Reverse
The reverse depicts Rui Barbosa at the Second Peace Conference, in The Hague (Holland). Barbosa attended the conference on the insistence of Foreign Minister Jose Maria da Silva. During his speech he promoted the notion that all nations are equal and sovereign. A map of the world can be seen behind the podium. Additionally toward the upper left is a section of the registration element.
Similar to the observe, the reverse has number "10 000"s at its upper-right and lower-left corners. Although the lower text now features a "guilloche" backing. It extend from the lower center, to the watermark area, at the right. The beforementioned security thread also aligns, between the letter "L" in "MIL" (Thousand).
Additionally UV sensitive fibers can be seen on the note's unprinted sections.
Additional Notes
This note's dimensions are 154 x 74 mm or 6.06 x 2.91 in, larger than a US Dollar.
The preferable method to preserve this note are large sized protective sleeves.
The Cruzado ISO code was BRC, it used Cz$ as its official symbol.
The Cruzado was subdivided into 100 Centavos, coins were in Centavos and Cruzados.
