This German coin represents the 4th denomination coin of the East German Mark (Series 1964). Formally known as the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR), the German Democratic Republic (1948-1990). The DDR was the eastern, Soviet supported, successor of the Großdeutsches Reich (1933-1945). The DDR was disbanded with the reunification of Germany, on 3 October 1990.
The coin is a smooth-edged design made of brass and weighs 5.4 g. Its dimensions are 22.2 mm (0.87 in) wide and 1.94 mm (0.076) in thick. Making it slightly larger in size to a US Penny (19.05/0.75 in), in that respect.
Reverse
The reverse is features a large "Emblem DDR", a hammer and compass, flanked by 2 rows of wheat. The hammer represents the industrial worker, while the compass represents the intellectual/specialized laborer. The rows of wheat are both decorative and represent the peasant (farm laborer).
This particular version of the national emblem was first adopted, in 1953. Notably the ribbon binding the wheat, is usually depicted as a tri-color German flag. Which obviously can't be depicted in a minted form. The emblem is wreathed by the text "DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK", German Democratic Republic. The word "REPUBLIK" is separated by a pair of 6-pointed stars (*).
Observe
The observe utilizes a a fairly simple and practical design. A testament to austerity the nation minted minted it and the general political mentality of the DDR. The reverse features a large number "20", its surface is raised and angular. Below is the text "Pfennig" (Pence) and the mint date "1969". Is located at the bottom, in slightly smaller text.
